Serial tracking
Which Shopify serial tracking workflow fits your store?
Different apps approach unit identity from different operational starting points. Here is what to look for and where TrackJoy fits.
Shopify merchants use serial tracking for different jobs. Some need software to create or automatically assign serial numbers. Others already receive manufacturer serials or IMEIs and need to attach each physical unit to its sale. POS, warranty fields, printing, multi-location inventory, and customer-facing verification can all change which workflow fits.
The useful question is not which app wins in the abstract. It is which advertised workflow matches how your staff receive, sell, and later find serialized units.
Approaches to serial tracking
Several apps on the Shopify App Store offer serial-number management. They differ in whether they generate serials or accept existing ones, which Shopify surfaces they support (Admin, POS, storefront), how they handle lookup and export, and whether they include warranty dates, custom fields, or multi-location inventory.
Some apps, like SeriaLogic, emphasise generating and assigning serials automatically, with POS, Flow, and multilingual support. Others, like SerializeIt, combine serial, IMEI, and lot-code tracking with broader inventory history, warranty dates, and multi-location operation.
TrackJoy takes a deliberately narrower approach, designed for electronics retailers whose products already carry manufacturer-assigned identifiers.
Who TrackJoy is designed for
TrackJoy is built for electronics retailers whose products already carry manufacturer-assigned serial numbers, IMEIs, or device IDs. It does not generate serials or manage warranty claims — it connects existing identifiers to sold units.
- Mark only products that require unit-level tracking.
- Open a Shopify order and scan or type one existing serial per unit.
- Reject blanks and duplicate serials before saving.
- Search the exact serial to find the authoritative Shopify order and sale context.
- Preview, copy, or download an authoritative audit CSV.
Order metafields remain the source of truth. TrackJoy's app-owned metaobject is a derived exact-lookup and export index, not a separate customer database.
TrackJoy's current boundaries
- No Shopify POS serial entry.
- No serial generation or automatic assignment.
- No warranty registration, date calculation, or claims management.
- No customer lookup portal.
- No multi-location serialized inventory management.
- No multilingual UI, purchase-order receiving, or repair history.
Five checks before choosing
- Decide where serials come from. Do staff scan manufacturer labels, import an existing list, or need the app to generate numbers?
- Choose the staff surface. Confirm whether entry must happen in Shopify Admin, POS, the storefront, or several places.
- Test a real order shape. Use fictional multi-quantity data, then correct and clear one value.
- Test retrieval and audit output. Search a saved serial and export the record in the format your return, recall, or audit process needs.
- Confirm adjacent requirements and pricing. Check warranty fields, printing, customer access, locations, languages, included usage, and overage terms against each current listing.
TrackJoy is not publicly available yet. It is being prepared for Shopify App Store review. Electronics retailers can request a demonstration using fictional or non-customer test data.
